Metla Komerc, Serbian wholesale and supermarket operator, has recently announced plans to construct a new mixed-use complex at the site of the former Leskovac fair "Šajkača" in southern Serbia.
The company, which acquired the site in July 2017 from the Serbian company Delta Real Estate, aims to invest approximately 6 million EUR in the new development. As announced by its representatives, the complex will include a modern two level shopping mall of 3,900 sqm GLA, as well as approximately 20,000 sqm of office and residential space.
The Leskovac fair is located in the city center and consists of five halls occupying a total of 8,000 sqm, as well as 15,000 hectors of land. Metla Komerc has already applied for a construction permit and expects to complete the works by the end of 2019. The project will encompass the reconstruction of wood features, interior roof reconstruction, space rearrangement, lift and escalator installations. The complex was designed by the local company Teking Architecture while the investor engaged Cushman & Wakefield to provide consulting and tenant representation services.
The new opening will increase the supply of modern retail space in Leskovac, a town in southern Serbia with 145,000 inhabitants. Besides local investments, the city has also attracted international developers. In June this year, the UK-based property developer Poseidon Group announced the construction of Capitol Park Leskovac, its fourth retail park in Serbia, which represents an investment of almost 10 million EUR. The project is scheduled to open in late autumn this year, attracting 16 leading Serbian and international retailers, while bringing around 500 jobs to the local community.
